A new X-Files movie is coming…sort of

There’s a new X-Files movie coming this summer and we’re all in! Wait…it’s not a new movie?

We were excited to learn that more X-Files are on the way. No, not the Ryan Coogler TV-series that has nothing to do with Mulder and Scully, but an R-rated cut of 2008’s The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

The standalone movie, which saw the continuation of the X-Files saga in a standalone horror-centric movie (think “monster of the week” episode during the series) is coming back with a new cut to be streamed on Hulu. (Damn, I just got rid of it!)

The movie’s title has been updated to X-Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn and is said to restore writer, director and series creator Chris Carter’s vision for the flick.

The movie shows Mulder and Scully, no longer FBI agents, come back into the fold to help find a missing agent along with a priest who claims to have visions.

This second movie was followed up with 2 more seasons on Fox beginning in 2016. While those episodes rarely captured the magic of the original run, it showcased the potential of X-Files and the relevancy to the modern day. And yes, Season 11’s “The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat” is still one of the best episodes of the 11-year run.

The aforementioned Ryan Coogler series is a return to the world of The X-Files and stars Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as two new characters assigned to the former x-files division of the FBI. Considering this probably takes place in the Trump era, that alone makes it worth watching.

As of July 2026, the pilot episode was completed and showrunners are waiting on Disney (who inherited X-Files in the Fox takeover a few years back) to give it a series order. Media outlets have report that it has been suggested the two-hour pilot could be reworked as a cinematic release, as well. No additional information is available on the plot or potential guest appearances by classic cast. Both Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny has expressed support for the project, while X-Files creator Chris Carter is executive producing. Considering the strange place the universe left off in the final season, excluding Mulder and Scully entirely seems like a bad idea. If we don’t get the dynamic duo of FBI agents back, at least something akin to Star Trek’s handoff to The Next Generation back in the 80s with a DeForest Kelly appearance could provide a comparable bridge from old to new without alienating fans.
