Star Trek: Prodigy Boldly Goes as Best Trek in Years with Season Two

The second season of “Star Trek: Prodigy” has premiered on Netflix, offering bold adventures set in the 24th century—a true embodiment of the best of Trek. While “Star Trek: Picard,” especially in its third season, nostalgically welcomed '90s Trek fans, “Prodigy” takes the magic of Rick Berman’s era and propels it forward with a modern yet familiar touch.

The series follows young explorers—Dal, Gwyn, Murf, Rok-Tahk, Jankom Pog, and the Medusan called Zero—as they become official Starfleet Academy trainees. Their journey leads them aboard the U.S.S. Voyager, NCC-74656-A, under Admiral Kathryn Janeway’s command. The ship’s secret mission continues the first season’s quest to find the lost Captain Chakotay, with the holographic Doctor overseeing the cadets-in-training. Time travel, space anomalies, and nods to Trek’s past enrich the series.

While “Prodigy” stands independently, its inclusion of Janeway, Chakotay, and the Doctor makes it an ad hoc sequel to “Star Trek: Voyager.” Notably, the hero ship for season two is the successor to the ‘90s TV series’ titular starship.

Despite its animated format, “Prodigy” maintains the moral dilemmas, swashbuckling space adventures, and cutting-edge Star Trek technology. Some may perceive it as a kids’ series, but that’s a misconception. The show creatively leverages animation’s freedom while staying true to Trek’s essence.

Looking ahead, a third season would be welcome. Perhaps we’ll see the characters evolve into full-fledged Starfleet officers, even commanding their own starship. Balancing nostalgia and fresh storytelling remains key.

Remember, the future of Trek depends on viewership. If “Prodigy” is your preferred cup of Trek tea (or coffee, in Janeway’s case), catch it on Netflix!
