Opinion: What's wrong with current Star Trek?

We look at a what's wrong with the current Star Trek from a quote by Rick Berman.

We don’t usually share social posts or repost other people’s content, but this quote from ’90s Trek showrunner Rick Berman as shared by Den of Geek perfectly sums up what’s gone sideways in the writing of the current series—including Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy—and what didn’t plague the two best modern shows, Picard and Prodigy.

It’s not “woke,” and it’s not even the quirky genre‑shifting SNW is obsessed with. It’s this.

I’ve got a little test I use in my head. Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn are great, but I also imagine what Jeff Hunter or Majel Barrett would’ve been like if they’d stayed in these roles. The SNW Pike doesn’t feel like the same character as Jeffrey Hunter’s version; Hunter’s Pike was more burdened, rugged, hands‑on—and definitely not a chef. Ultimately, the test is: “How would the older actors sound saying that?” If the answer is “ridiculous,” then you’ve found your problem.

A problem Rick Berman hits on to a T.
